There is not only one animal but there are two,they are Porcupine and Hedgehog.

A hedgehog is a small spiny mammals.They are Insects

Porcupines are rodents best known for their coat of sharp spines, or quills, that defend them from predators.They are rodents.

Only humans "sticks pins in its coat", however there are many animals that naturally grow addapted hairs that serve as a defense against predators.

There are, of course, Hedgehogs and Porcupines, both of which are almost completely covered in quills. There are also the short snouted and long snouted echidna, which live in australia. There are also some species of mice that, though they are not fully covered, do have quills in among the rest of it's fur.

why would an animal stick pins in its coat? How would an animal get hold of pins?

Are you talking about a hedgehog?!
