As soon as the umbilical stump falls off you can completely submerge them. My babies always bathed in a baby tub; I never sponge bathed them. All of my kids had very dry skin, so they only bathed every second day, but I know lots of Moms who make a short bath before bed part or their routine since it's so soothing for baby.

My son had his first bath when he was about 4 days old. There is no need to wait for the umbilical cord to fall off. My son was born prem and was in the hospital for a month and that is what the nurses told me. They also said that you only need to bathe them every 3 or 4 days since they do nothing to get dirty at that age and the less frequently you bathe them the better it if for their skin.

I bathed the baby from day 1. I had a herbal bath mix that helped heal the cord and my stitches so he was in there with me. Then after that, I'd say 2 weeks, we gave him a bath in the baby tub. I kept his diaper on the first time, to get used to the open ness, then I would just keep my hand on his belly, so it was like someone was holding him. He loves his bath time, he's now 91/2 months.

You can wash him down with a washcloth every day but do not submerge him in water until his bellybutton thing falls off! Then you give them a bath every few days. My 15 week old loves baths!

The nurse gave our baby his first bath at two days old. He was washed outside of the tub but his body was submerged in the tub for about a minute. This is mainly to rinse him. As long as you wrap him in a baby bath towel as soon as you take him out, it is OK.

My daughter's pediatrician allowed us/told us that it was ok to bath her (submerge) her whenever we were ready to give her a bath. We did it about two days after we brought her home and her cord stump fell off beatifully with no problems!

Obviously you never fully submerge them.
Now if the baby needs a real bath, lots of messy diapers or throwing up and you feel he or she needs a real bath...any age is fine. Just prepare everything you need before the bath, and it's smart to have another adult around in case you need support, shampoo, whatever.
Get the water to room temp, where if you put your elbow in the water, you barely feel the water...not hot or cold. The put the baby into the water, (Fill baby tub or sink with enough water to just go to baby's tummy, add a towel to the water to cushion baby's butt if you don't have a baby tub) then rinse baby, wash with baby shampoo or soap, always holding baby's head up. Be careful baby doesn't slip, smack into anything. When done, be SUPER careful, as that kid is going to be SLIPPERY. You may want to drain the sink with baby in it, then wrap towel around baby to lift out of sink. Keep warm while you dry him or her.

As soon as the umbilical cord falls off. But i would use one of those little baby tubs, or clean out the sink really good and thats fine too. It usually falls off at about 2 weeks or so.
