You need to be certain of what you are saying, and be consistent with your message.
It helps to have proven evidence to back up any claims you have, for example, if you tell a funny story you read in the news, then maybe say where you read it (so it can be verified).
Additionally, Your behavior needs to match what you say to someone. If you say you like someone at work, but you disrespect them or gossip about them, then you lose credibility.
Compassion, credibility, and consistency are ways a person can begin to build trust.
When you've just met someone, break the ice and start building rapport be making it ALL ABOUT THEM. Inspire them to feel good about themself with a compliment, then a question. It will put them at ease and they will feel more comfortable and be more receptive to you. Notice things they do that you know that they secretly hope people will notice (The way they dress, what they drive, if they work out, their hairstyle or jewelry, etc). Make positive observations. Then show interest in what they think, how they feel, etc. People also love it when you ask for their advice.
People start to trust you when you show that you have their interest in mind, and no ulterior motive or hidden agenda.
Salespeople gain trust with people by asking questions to discover what people want, need, and expect, before presenting any options. Salespeople who simple rave about a product lose credibiity because it may not fit the needs of the customer, no matter how great it is. For example, a 2-seater sportscar may be a great car, but not suitable for a family of five.
Why don't people trust someone instantly? Self-Preservation, fear that they will be taken advantage of, hurt, or deceived. They are suspicious of someone because they don't know if that person has their best interest in mind. When you make it all about them, you demonstrate otherwise, and the fears subside.

I don't think there is anything you can do...trust is something that is built around many facets - and it is a two way street. I think the only way to build trust in a new relationship is through time. As you witness their value of character (with you and with others around them), experience situations in which trust plays a factor, and genuinely get to know them, the trust will come (or possibly won't!).
An attempt to rush the process would possibly result in unwarranted trust - which turns out to be untrusting...

Be as respectful as possible. Treat them the way you want people who trust you to treat you. Look that person in the eyes, don't be unreliable, and don't do anything dishonest (lying, cheating, etc.) I hate to tell you but sometimes it's a long process.

I have a hard time trusting people when i don't really know them. What I suggest is this: give them a test, tell them something semi-personal to see if it gets back to you...if it doesn't, then bump it up a little. Also, trust your gut, its almost always right...good luck!

By being true to you you create your reality as you desire it, destiny. When you re-act with fear and doubt you create the illusional world in which fate rules. Those that are in your life are here to show you about you. Are you living your life with integerty? Do you love, forgive, respect and trust yourself? Know thy self and To thine ownself be true. Very old words and very menaingfull here and now as they all ways have. There is only ever here and now .
