i think because of this modern culture, as children grow up they hear everyone around them speaking the word "like" after every other word. Maybe not in their own home, but at school or when hanging out with anybody their age. Then they pick it up and soon all of their sentences sound like this:
"I saw this movie and it was, like so old from, like the forties or something, and i was like 'ewww' 'cause it was dusty, but then we went to the mall for, like 4 hours and I was OK."

2. They pick the habit up from friends or family.
3. They aren't very bright.

It stated with Valley girls (living in the SanFernando section of LA county.) Their "language" became known as Valspeak. See the article below. Why anyone would emulate such a person, I cannot imagine.

It's how they were taught or hey just heard it so much it's stuck on them now. I say it because I'm still thinking of the word I'm going to say.
Or they use it if they are going to use examples or explain something or ect like that.
Like this.

Most likely, it's because of being around a dialect of language for a while, such as people who use it, that it eventually spreads, sometimes without one noticing.

People have become satisfied with being morons. I hate the fact that people no longer find in necessary to articulate a proper sentence. It's like, ya know, like, crazy.

like, totally annoying. It like, makes me want to, like, pound hot needles into my ears with, like, a hammer. I actually broke up with a, like, totally hot chick over this issue.
Nothing makes you sound like more of a, like, RETARD, in my opinion.
It's worse than listening to Hillary Clinton or Rosie O'Donnell.
