Sometimes people mess around with chemicals, trying to create something, and they burn their eyebrows off. I would say those people are amateurs.

Unfortunately, in order to agree, I would have to amend the statement to say "There should be no amateurs in science." There is so much junk science out there, that does not stand the test of real scientists, but not before becoming part of the modern urban legend. Hard to undo.

The word typically is used to refer to a person with no professional training, but one of the definitions of 'amateur' is 'a person inexperienced or unskilled in a particular activity.' Newly-trained scientists need the guidance and experience of those who have gone before them, as with any vocation.

Not really, I think we're all amateurs...the Einsteins of the world will tell you that they have only begun to scratch the surface of scientific knowledge...

they all are amateur, discovery of something new are all accidents then they learn how it happened
