No its not always necessary but it helps a great deal for people who know what they want to do and for people to figure themselves out. It is expensive but it is an investment worth while in most careers. THe question is what do you want to become? Do you need a college dregree for that? How much demand is there for your intended career? College is not necessary but in the long run it will help you more times then it will hurt

you haven't really made your question clear, but I'll answer what I think you are asking.
I do wish people would think a bit more laterally about whether to go to uni. Blair's government has this aim to get every 18 yr old into further education to keep them off the dole statistics, but frankly, higher education is just not right for many people. Think about it from the point of view of what career you want. Then ask do I need a degree to do this type of work? If you do, then fine, go to uni. If you don't, and you're not attracted to university for the social life or any other reason, then don't go - you'll be wasting three years when you could have been earning a living.
I know a 22-yr-old who's come out of college with a useless degree, can't get a job and is blaming everyone else for 'making' him go to university. No-one made him, he decided because he couldn't be bothered stopping for 5 minutes at the age of 18 to think about what he wanted to do as a career. Decide on your career then GO FOR IT, whether that means university, vocational training, night classes, work experience, whatever.

it depends on your point of view. if you are content in having a blue-collar or low-paying job as long as it fits your needs, then university might not seem so necessary. however, if you want to improve your lifestyle (not necessarily means that you're ambitious), university is necessary. but this does not apply to people who already own businesses or are movie stars or well-paid singers. nevertheless, if you're already at this level, its still preferable if you got a higher education. it's voluntary at this level but i do think that everyone should go to university just because the education is important and vital.

It depends on your goals, and what the employer you want to work for requires. In today's world you need at least a Bachelors degree to make a decent salary. An Associates Degree is good for starters, but if you want a career, go for a BA/BS Degree. An old saying is let your employer pay for your Masters Degree.

Not always.. from my personal experience. You can always get a job and make good money without going to a college. I think street smarts pays off much more then books. Certain job lines pay more if you certificates rather than college degree.

It depends on what you choose to do. Some occupations insist on a college degree and they will not waver from this. Some occupations do not. Any licensed profession such as Dr. , Lawyers, Nurses or Teachers will require a degree.
