The list is Malaysia, Colombia, Phillipines, Chile, Pakistan, Peru, Algeria, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Nigeria, Romania, Ukraine and Morocco. I know some of these are former communist states but I need to know how many of these countries are or were communist countries, the more the better for what I'm writing. Thanks very much.

I appreciate the answers I have so far but could you perhaps focus slightly more on the non-European countries if possible but thanks anyway, helpful so far.

I guess the communist countries you're looking for are the Czech Republic ( as part of Czechoslovakia; communist between 1948-1989 ), Hungary ( 1945-1989), Romania (1945-1989), Ukraine (as part of the Soviet Union; 1921-1990) -meaning that they were exclusively ruled by communist parties and fully organized their economies according to communist principles.

As for the other countries, between 1970-1973 Chile was run by Salvador Allende, a communist, but with the help of a heterogeneous coalition of parties (ranging from Socialists to Christian-Democrats). Also in Algeria between 1965-mid 80's the government was inclined towards communism, without really turning it into a communist country; the same in Bangladesh.

Certainly, New Zealand ,the UAE and Morroco were never communist states. not 100% sure about the others.

The following were communist countries until fairly recently:-

Czech Republic (as part of the CSSR....the combination of what is now the Czech Republic and the Republic of Slovakia), Hungary, Romania and the Ukraine.

Other countries which may be relevant in Europe, and which were formerly communist, include, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia (and the other independent countries which formed part of the old communist Yugoslavia), Albania and Bulgaria.

The best way of checking this out is to look at old maps of Europe, which should be on the internet as historic maps.

Happy to help.

Czexh republic, hungary, romania and Ukraine definatley were between 1945 and the early ninties.

Chile dabbled in it just after world war 2 but im not sure if they were actually socialist rather than communist.

The others i very much doubt it but I could be wrong.
