I can think of a few, but my fear is that as soon as I name them, something dreadful will come up about them. What do you think of these:

Anne Hathaway
Sandra Bullock

Johnny Depp
Shaquille O'Neal

These are people who tend to shy away from limelight, but when they've made the news, it's typically because they're helping others.

Good luck! And... don't quote me! :)

I like to use sports people and business people who come from similar backgrounds as my kids and have interesting stories.

For example, Lance Armstrong. He's from my hometown, had a tough time in school because he didn't fit in, etc.

Or business people - like Dave Thomas the guy who founded Wendy's. Just a regular guy who started out flipping burgers and ended up rich and famous (and a damn smart businessman).

If you dig, you can find plenty of people of every ethnicity and background who have "made it" and don't have any nastiness in their backgrounds. Try cruising the biography section at Barnes and Noble, or just ask the people you meet who impress you about their backgrounds.

One more thing.... We ALL have flaws and failures. If you're looking for a "perfect" role model, there is only one, and he died 2000 years ago. I think it's a mistake to reject the lessons that can be learned from people just because they're not perfect.

Instead I like to ask my kids "what can we learn from this person?" and have a discussion about attitudes and persistence or whatever.

Good luck
Scott

Celebrities should never be role models for anyone. A role model should be someone you know personally who lives their life honestly, treats people fair and who is hard working.
You could pick a celebrity as a role model and a month later he, or she could go over the edge. ( Tom Cruise )

How about celebrities that are trying to use their influence to do good in the world? Like Bono from U2, or Chris Martin from Coldplay? I guess if your kids aren't into music, that might not work though.....
Also, look at some of the stars on the Disney Channel, they're pretty family friendly.

naturally we parents should be our children's role models. but that doesn't mean your question is worthless.

for male celebrity role models, i immediately thought of two names: ben stiller (the comedic actor) and dwayne wade (basketball star, with the miami heat). both are family men, they both give time and money to charity, and, most importantly, they just seem to have good heads on their shoulders. they're humble and down-to-earth.

as for females... i respect actresses mariska hargitay and reese witherspoon. although i'm sure there are others who fit the mold, i think these two have a degree of dignity that is often absent in the vast majority of celebrity women.

so, there's four names, but remember the most important two: mom and dad!
