Lying on your left side when pregnant improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta. It also helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. This, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands.

I think that if you lay on the right side, pressure from the baby's weight presses on a very important artery that provides blood and nutrients to the placenta. This is also true for laying on your back for any significant amount of time.
Another thing is, even when you're not pregnant, if you have heartburn or nausea, it is best to lay on your left side because your stomach kind of leans that way anyway. If you lay on your right side, it kind of in a way turns your stomach upside down and makes heartburn or nausea worse.

You can't lay on your back because the baby can put pressure on the vena cava - the major vein running from your legs up to your heart. You can do some harm to yourself and your baby if you cut off the circulation to your heart from half your body like that. You'll be all tingly and you can pass out from it.
By laying on your left side, you can improve your circulation and keep the baby from putting pressure on the rest of your internal organs.
hope this helps!

All I know is that while I was in labour with all three of my children that when the baby's heart rate dropped the nurses were always rolling me onto my left side. So I would assume it's to ensure that the baby is getting the most from to umbilical cord.

Its because of where the baby lies in your stomach. It resides more in the left side of your abdomen, so imagine what strain it would be for the uterus and womb to be pulled (by gravity) while you are lying on your right side. Also, lying on your back is a nono because the baby will lie along your spine, cutting off the blood supply to your legs and your ********.

Because it provides better circulation throughout the body, thus providing the baby with more blood flow, which means more oxygen and nutrients.
