My university professor told me he won't write a recommendation for me :S!!! I wanted to reply to a university abroad and need recommendations. I was not the best student but am not too bad too! My average grade is 4.41 of 5 (where 5 is the best). He told me he won't write the recommendation because I don't have any articles :( !!! He had not even a thought that he has used my conspects of his lectures for several years already because I've written them so well!!! Tell me what do you think of this? Is it normal? I don't know because I've not been in such a situation before!
Thank you,
Maria

I am sorry to hear about your difficulty. Usually, if a professor declines to write a recommendation, it is because s/he does not feel able to write a good one.

I do not know what field of study you are in, or at what level you are currently studying. However, publication of articles is usually not expected until a student reaches the PhD level, so if you are not yet a doctoral student, your professor's expectations would seem to be very unusual, even strange.

I do hope you can find other recommenders. This one does not seem worth pursuing.

Surely you have more than one professor! Can others write for you?

I would also ask for an appointment with this prof and review the requirements for the program you are applying for. I would ask him what you need to do to fulfill his requirements to write a letter.

Unless this requirement is written down somewhere, the professor has no right to block your progress. If he won't write the recommendation, ask him to put his reasons in writing.

Then compare the requirements to his letter and take it to the Dean.

It all depends of your level of education.
Are you MA, PhD ? Are you supposed to have some publications at you level ? Is your university mostly research oriented and you focused you efforts in teaching ?
Sadly, there is always people to try to steal your work in academy, but one of the main thing you have to learn is how to protect yourself from this.
So, I would say you prof is not nice, not ethical but that he is kind of normal.
Sorry
