Has anybody ever rode on an Amtrack Train? We are thinking about taking a train on our next vacation instead of a plane because of our 1 year old. I was just wondering how the rides are. Is it loud, bumpy, comfortable, etc.?

Yes, I have. It was fun. It was a bit noisy at times. Freight companies own the tracks. So, sometimes the Amtrak trains get delayed, but for the most part not too late. 3 and a half hours was the longest. The coaches are comfortable and clean and you can actually sleep. My daughter travels by train to visit her dad and it is not expensive. The security is good because the conductors go thru the cars periodically. You can get up and go to an observation car or the lounge if you get tired of your seats. A little activity is good for the little one. There is tv and a snack bar. The sleeper cars are expensive and not worth it. I would travel by train anywhere....

Any trip that takes more than 6 hours on amtrak I would personally go by plane instead. I went to Orlando from Dc earlier this year. After about 6 hours you will wish you had gotten plane tickets. The food isn't bad on the train if you get one with a dining car. Its not loud really. The people on the train were louder than the train itself. At least till nightfall then everyone was either on their laptop, listening to their Ipod or watching a movie on their DVD player.

I took an amtrack train through the rocky mountains to denver and it was very comfortable. I recomend them if you are going through something scenic. The ride was fairly quiet and the seating was comfortable. I dont know how a 1 year old would do because train rides are usually long (mine was 8 hrs.) But i dont see why it wouldnt be ok.

I like Amtrak, but I took it with my 2 year old and it was a nightmare. If you are traveling more than 4 hours on it, it can be very hard. If you have your own sleeper car then go for it. But the baby will get bored and want to move around. I didn't get much rest and relaxation.
hope my info helped

I thoroughly enjoy the train experience. Plenty of room, comfort and privacy. The views from the window are much better than those from the highway. The price can be steep, though.

They make bulletins even as the practice is entering the station. also get a map of the stations alongside the course and also you could continually tell the position you're at and about how a techniques you would possibly want to bypass.
