This is a suggestion by the government. What do you think?

YES
They have started in some of the provinces in Canada making community service mandatory if you want your high school leaving certificate.
In your 4 years of high school you MUST do 40 hours of community service. That is only 10 hours a year.
I think this start in elementary school gets the children prepared for the mandatory service in high school.
When this service was first started some children ignored it. Since they are in high school and learning to be responsible the reminder was stated at the beginning of each year. By the end of the 4 years some students had not done their service and when they did not receive their diploma parents and students were yelling...
The school boards then had to have a summer programme so the students to get their 40 hours.
Now students know they must do this work and are not finding it hard at all.

Mind over matter and hopefully it will make this generation of students more thoughtful of others property.

I agree... But small chores. When I was a kid, I had a list of chores that I did through out the week for a small allowance. Example: Keep a star chart of chores and the kids names and certain chores on certain days. Like maybe on Monday, the child or children could help dry the dishes and put them away. On Tuesday, they can take out the trash. Wednesday, they could clean the bathroom. There are tons of things children can do that won't take up too much time. Also make it lots of fun though! They don't have to get rewarded with money. Perhaps they could rent a movie and you could have a family movie night or something. Best of Luck

Brilliant plan, get them back up chimneys I say. Seriously though, I can't see it will do them any harm to start taking a bit of responsibility. Wish I'd made my kids do more when they were small. I'm not sure how the government hit on the figure of 1hour a week though. Sounds like the nanny state again.

I think that's a nice idea. It could help them with their cleaning skills. The goevernment should try that. But they take showers and thats more than an hour a week so there ya go!

I think its an excellent idea.. Might teach the spoiled kids a thing or two..
In the past, children respected school, adults, teachers, and cleanliness. These days, there is no respect, graffiti all over the walls, trash everywhere, and they expect it to be clean when they get back the next day..
I taught for a total of 3 months in a pre-school a few years ago.. I was appalled by the rudeness of the kids.. One after lunch tossed his mess on the floor and when I asked him to pick it up. He said "Why? my maid does it for me"... I quickly reminded him I was not his maid and there weren't maids at school and he was to clean it up...
children are way way too spoiled these days..

Yes I agree. If it is the school each student should help clean their school, say a group of them at a time and rotate the schedule. If it is at home....most definitely everyday!

i wish it happened when my husband was at school maybe then he's be a bit more help full! but i think it's up to the parents to teach kids skills like that, my three year old loves cleaning, she helps me with the dishes and the washing, i don't think it would be fair to have to do it in school as well.

Cleaning up after an art lesson would be a good way of introducing team interaction.
