Hello,
No knowing where you are traveling to, it's hard to say exactly. But in general, there are small inns and private casitas in most areas tourists travel to.

We have lived in Baja Sur, between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos, for 10 years and have a lovely guesthouse on the beach that we rent out for vacation travel. You can visit our website at http://www.villapuestadelsol.com.

I am sure you can find similar accommodations on the Internet.

Saludos,
Melanie

It depends where. What is your question? From 3 stars you can find very good clean safe hotels, but it depends on the town. Mexico City has more than 30 million people living there! People from the US rent appartments and live there, if they ever get a working permit they do all sorts of things, wait tables, clean garbage, translate, etc.

Most Americans (and higher income Mexicans) that I know that work in Mexico (and I know quite a few of them- at least 30) live in the US and commute across the border (such as living in Rio Rico in Arizona and then commuting down to Nogales, MX to work). They do this because there generally arent a whole lot of decent, safe places to live in Mexico, at least around the border town areas. There are some (dont get me wrong), but not a lot, and the US side of the border is preferable (like I said, even the Mexicans I know that can afford it and can get their immigration papers do this). I personally feel fairly unsafe outside of most tourist areas in Mexico (Ive got blonde hair and am clearly not Mexican, even from a distance).
