Because they are spinor objects rather than vector or scalar objects. All fermions are spinors and electrons are fermions.

Here's an analogy: rest a plate on your hand as if you were carrying it. Now rotate your hand making sure the plate stays on top of your hand. You will find that you have to either move your hand over your arm or under it (depending on which way you rotate). When the plate has rotated 360 degrees, you will be in a rather ackward position that is not at all like how you started. Now keep rotating in the same direction. You will find that when the plate has rotated 720 degrees you will be back in the position where you started. This is how spinors act.

It's just the way the equations work out. I think it was Richard Feynman (pretty famous physicist) who said if anyone claims that they really understand quantum mechanics they are lying. No one has or ever will visualize what half spin really means..
