The French stopped Tesco selling their perfume as Tesco wanted to sell purfume at discount prices.

So if purfume is kept at an artificial high then why do women still buy it?

I'm guessing Tesco is a discount/drugstore-type place, since we don't have that here in Texas. Cosmetics and other beauty companies often stop these kinds of retailers from selling their products because they aren't purchased from authorized distributors. That means that the product that ends up on the shelves could possibly be tampered with or even partially used bottles that have been refilled with water or alcohol and then resold. That's often how discount retailers can sell the product cheaper.

As with all retail, everything has a markup. It's necessary for companies to turn a profit. Perfume has a fairly high markup, but this is because of the expense of the ingredients, methods of extracting the various notes, quality packaging materials, marketing and then exporting the product to other countries. I, for one, am willing to pay the price for quality perfume because I feel it's worth it. Any girl can tell you that Chanel Mademoiselle smells SO much better than, say, Revlon's Charlie. The more the perfume industry is supported, the better they can continue to produce high quality products.

The story is that some of the essences are costly - production is costly, etc. Pefurme is more concentrated than a body spray, etc.

MY theory continues that people are of the mindset if it costs a lot of money, it must be better.

Look at the price variations for handbags. Really - does one even THINK it costs that much more money to produce that $900 bag over a $200 or $100 bag?
