From Greg Iles:

What Order Would I read Greg's Books In

People often ask if there is a specific order in which they should read my novels. A chronological order is not necessary, but certain of my books are linked by common characters or themes, and they do have a sequence in time.

If you have just read Turning Angel, you should next read The Quiet Game, the novel in which Penn Cage first appeared, and which many readers believe is my best book. Blood Memory was written before Turning Angel, and Penn’s father Tom Cage appears there in a supporting role, but I would read “Blood Memory” after “The Quiet Game,” not before. You will appreciate Tom much more then.

Of my “Natchez” or “Mississippi” novels, the “Penn Cage” novels are a subcategory. I’ve tried not to write a series character, for reasons I’ll discuss elsewhere, but Penn has cropped up as a minor character in other Natchez books, and seems to be developing a life of his own. Of the rest, Mortal Fear, Dead Sleep, 24 Hours, and Sleep No More —while all set in Mississippi (or New Orleans)---stand completely alone and can be read at any point.

Of my two World War Two novels, Spandau Phoenix was written first, but Black Cross occurs earlier in time (50 years earlier, in fact). I would suggest reading Black Cross first of those two.

If you are easily offended by strong sexual content or violence, a few of my books may be too much for you. Those same few are not recommended for young teenagers. Below is a bit of a warning.

Sleep No More (Highly explicit sexual content and depravity.)
Mortal Fear (Highly explicit sexual content and violence.)
Turning Angel (Explicit teen sex and drug use.)
Blood Memory (Child abuse, rape, repressed memories of incest.)
Dead Sleep (Recall of rape.)

I think my books tend to skew along male/female lines as well. I sometimes write in the first person as a female, and these books are often ranked among my best. (Am I gay? No.) If you are a woman, I think you’ll probably like this group of books best: Dead Sleep, Blood Memory, 24 Hours, Mortal Fear, The Quiet Game, Black Cross. If you’re male, I think you’ll gravitate more toward: Turning Angel, The Quiet Game, Black Cross, Mortal Fear, Spandau Phoenix, The Footprints of God, Sleep No More, etc. Obviously there will be many exceptions to this grouping. I often get email from women telling me that Spandau Phoenix, which is sort of Jack Higgins meets early Tom Clancy, is their favorite book of all time. This puzzles me, but hey, to each her own.
