that he exists. after systematically doubting all the evidence of his senses and all the faculties of his reason, he still had to acknowledge his own existence. he might not be correct in what he otherwise thought or believed, but he was certain that there was something thinking and believing which was his extant self.

'Cogito ergo sum'. I Think therefore I am.
He knew 'for sure' that he was here, but not much else. He still wrote books though.
