For my students who hate math, I tell them math is your friend. It will always give you the right answer if you check your work. So you know when you are done with a problem or not.
Math helps us to practice a set of steps in solving a problem. Once we learn the steps, we do them the same way each time. So we know how to follow the pattern from beginning to the middle steps to the end, and then how to check it over afterwards.
This trains our brains to solve problems, to know when we are at the beginning, or in the middle, or finished at the end. We gain a sense of "intuition" when we are not doing a step right, and need to go back and redo it to make the other steps work out. So one of the purposes is to help us "troubleshoot" while solving problems, knowing when we are on the right track, and when we have found the right answer.

Math is the foundation by which all reasoning with numbers is understood. The mere act of counting is a mathematical function with out math numbers would contain no meaning. Even if a person can read and write numbers with out even the basic understanding of math a note like this would not be understood: "Go to the store and buy 5 loaves of bread." A person who did not know even the basics of math would not understand. They would know that they needed to go to the store and get bread but the question they would have is: "what is 5?"
The real hatred of math comes from the lack of understanding of certain math functions. Each person has their own strengths and weaknesses in math. These weanesses stem from their lack of understanding which causes them to lose interest. Because there are so manny facets in math it can seem overwelming and even intimidating. You can't make someone like something but you can help them to understand it better

Try relating it to art or music or the internet or something that you like. For example, did you know that math is the only universal language and if it weren't for the digital language of zeroes and ones technology could not advance.
