through the winter in pots? Have any of you done this? If so, should the pots be much larger than the plants, what about winter care? I doubt they need watering in the winter. I live in Massachusetts, temp between 15F below to 55F above during winter months.

Evergreens survive further north than you so it should be fine. I would suggest a Blue Spruce. We planted a four foot one 14 years ago and it is only 8-9 feet tall now. I wouldn't swear to it, but I think the width of the pot should be as wide as you would like the tree to grow. Be careful of the pot you put it in. There is always the possibility of one cracking in a freeze.

They are just like any other tree outdoors in winter; the evergreens will do all right, as long as no one disturbs them. The real problem with potted trees is theft and vandalism, not being cold out-doors.
