Standby = computer goes into a state of energy conservation.
When you press a key or move the mouse, your computer comes to attention and is ready to work for you
Logoff = If you have more than one user sharing the computer(and even if you only have one) the computer will log out of that account and go to the log on screen.
this is for when you have information set up on your computer and you dont want others accessign the information or the computer settings, then you log off your account (administrator) and you let others log on to as guest, or whatever other account you created. (limited account)
That is, if you set them as a limited account user.
And yes, before anyone asks, you can have more than one administrator account. Depends on how you set it up as.
Hibernate = shuts down the computer, storing whatever is on screen (in memory) into the hard drive, so that when you turn the computer back on, you return to the point you were before you sent it into hibernation mode
Difference between hibernate and standby, is in hibernate mode, your machine will actually turn off. Stand By, will activate when anything is moved mouse, or keys pressed.
But both will return to what you were doing before you set it

Hibernate and Standby are two different sleep options that Windows XP offers. Hibernate saves an image of your desktop, including all open windows and files. Then it powers down your computer just as if you had turned it off. When you turn your computer on again, your windows and files are open just as you left them. Standby is a more traditional sleep mode, as it reduces the power your computer uses to almost nothing. When you select Standby, the power to your screen, hard drive, and peripheral devices is cut. However, the power to the computer's memory (RAM) is maintained so your open files stay open.

standby puts the computer in a non-active state (system is still running but not active)
Logoff just exits your user id 9programs are still running under your id you just "signed off" your settings)
Hibernate partially shuts down the pc, system critical files and programs are put on "hold" and user input is shutoff (programs stop running).

The best to rest your computer is to just hibernate it.
"holding" all unimportant system files and still running few, certain important files.
