Unfortunately, recently, the Academy Awards have been a "rewards" award. That is to day, the people who have achieved them have only done so because there is a sort of "debt" to repay that has nothing to do with the Oscar at all..
For instance...
In 1997, Kim Basinger won because Hollywood ostracized her for pulling out of a film called "Boxing Helena"... Also in 1997, "Titanic" won because everyone told James Cameron that he was crazy to make this movie for 300 million dolars, and it went on to gross over 1 billion..."The LOTR: Return of the King" won because all three movies were great, not just the last one...and the following year "Million Dollar Baby" won because "Mystic River" should have the year before, but "LOTR" won instead..
I would like to say that all debts are paid...but ...idk...
THANKS!

For every truly inspired film with an oscar attached theres about 50 overhyped ones with oscars attached. I personally wouldn't go and see a film just because it got an oscar because so many of them are just so over-rated. There are so many brilliant films that got no oscar attention at all.

Lord The Rings - Return of the King didn't deserve all the Oscars it got. The Two Towers was a much better film.

It's just a money making promotion to get more people to watch, rent or buy the movie. It only makes the actors much richer. It's not about the movie anymore!

True, and movies like 'The Fountain' are too thought-provoking to get any attention at all. Travesty.

Duh, you don't say! Let's review the Oscars....it's an award ceremony created by the film industry in the US, voted on by film-makers in the US, and given out mainly to their friends in the industry, normally in the US.
Oh, of course, they also award them to the Brits to further americanise them.
