With a two stage variable speed furnace, your can have two fans but at least one of them is also variable speed. It will ramp up in speed as needed to achieve the setting on the thermostat.

We have a single fan variable speed Trane air handler. It starts out slow and will not speed up unless more heat or cooling is needed. Also being variable speed you can actually have the installer adust the speed a bit if it helps with noise problems. That's what we did.

My son works for Trane and he says that all of the name brands have some points in their favor and some not in their favor. Having a good installer with good service is probably more important than the actual brand.

I would also ask about a full parts and labor 10 year warranty. I think you will find it is pretty cheap when you look at the over all cost for a 19 SEER unit.

If I understand correctly, a two-stage/variable-speed furnace will have two fan speeds. This will allow you to circulate air slowly and quietly, and can mean more efficient operation in some circumstances. Mostly, the two fan speeds mean that the system is very quiet for much of its operation, switching to the the higher, noisier speed when a big temperature change is called for.

If your system is noisy, my experience is that round ducts are much quieter than rectangular ducts. I switched the ducts to my bedroom and the round ducts that I put in are MUCH quieter. This will probably not matter as much to you with a variable-speed furnace, but it is something to consider.

One other thing: You should install a kit that will allow outside air to be burned in your furnace. This makes the furnace more efficient.

Good luck!

A 2 stage furnace is one that has a low burner setting and if the furnace can not keep up on the low setting it will automaticly switch to the higher burner setting
