There is much competition for a business advertising dollar. TV, yellow pages and news paper just to name a few. When you selling the concept of why a company should advertise on your radio station do your homework. Learn about that business. Understand who their target market is. They more you understand the business needs they better you will be able to communicate.
Business owners need results and want to be able to get a solid return on investment. Name recognition may not be enough, working with them to develop a marketing campaign that will yield results will improve your closing ratio. Also testimonials are a good tool as well. If the prospect can hear success stories from other business, it can go a long way to closing the deal.

Depending on your audience demographics, record a selection of :15 and :30 sec sample radio spots for different businesses: SELL their individual product by coming up with creative ideas and good, descriptive, tight copy writing, use great sfx and when you've played them the spots remind them that radio ads are less expensive than tv or print!

You need to send a media pack out to companies who target your listeners in their ad campaigns. Then you need to try to make contact with the marketing managers and go and see them to introduce yourself and talk about your station. If you are a new station you should give them a little radio that is fixed to your band so they can get a feel for your programming.
You also need to send them a list of your programming or upcoming talkshow features that they may want to sponsor or book ads around. i.e. if you're getting someone on the show to talk about beauty you may want to get the relevant company to sponsor the show or book a competition/ giveaway around it.
There's alot more too it, of course, but I hope this helps to get you started.

Get your radio jingle on tape sit around in your car, play it loud enough and make sure the person you want to buy advertising hears it. Do this at least 5 times then try again.

You need to know exactly who listen to your radio station, your consumers, when they listen to it how it compares to other station. Then market to companies who are trying to target this group.
