back in the day it was the only ornament they had. kinda looks like snow and it's a nice way for the fam to have a moment before the disapointment, failure and finger pointing begins. merry xmas!

I'm wondering if it goes back to the depression era. Back then they didn't have much money and things were homemade. Popcorn and cranberries were stung up to look decorative. It could also have been started as an outside decoration for the birds to nibble on. I don't think I'd eat if afterward though.

Don't eat it! It will probably be stale. I believe the tradition started because it is cheap, festive, and originally trees were decorated outside. Popcorn is specifically American in origin having dated to colonial introduction by the Native American population. Trees were originally decorated outside. I suppose popcorn could have been popular because birds would be able to clean up the mess. ;)

it is mostly something that you can do with your kids. to let them help decorate the tree and make it fun for them. i really liked doing it when i was a child and yes i did eat some popcorn when i was doing it.

Because back in the old days that is all they could afford if they didn't have much money plus it was a fun project to have the children do since back then there was no such thing as television or radio

So that the Christmas Spiders have something to eat. If you haven't heard of the spider you should look up The Legend of the Christmas Spider. You'll love it.

It's just a tradition...I'm not sure where it started...probably in the early days....when people couldn't afford decorations...like the depression.
