Why do people act as though a phone call is important and a person isn't? I turn up at the desk and I'm talking to the person, but when the phone rings they answer it. I'm out with a freind and when the phone rings they answer it.

When I'm with someone and the phone rings I leave it to ring and explain that a real person is more important than a phone call - the caller can leave a message!

If im going somewhere where I dont want to be bothered, I set my PDA to fwd all incoming calls directly to the voicemail, so my phone doesnt even ring. I dont want to put the phone on silent so I can still hear when e-mails and instant messages come in.

It is rude for people to answer calls when they are out with a friend someplace. The call can wait!

I agree totally.

Face to face, the person in front of you is more important. The only way that it would be OK is if a guy's wife is pregnant and could give birth at any time (or something along that line) and he is expecting the call regarding this. But most young people (most older people whose children are grown) do not expect this kind of call.

I personally would just ignore the call. I would have the urge to answer, however. I think it's all a part of this instant communication trend that we're now up to our waist in. People think, "if I can, I will" and we ignore the possibility that the person in front of us may feel snubbed, in a way. We expect others to "get over it" because "it's no biggie."

It's a pity.

lts annoying if you let it ring for a long time so you have no choice but to pick it up. Others may be expecting a call or it's just a force of habit. No matter what, its rude to answer a phone call when you're out on a date, in a movie house, during mass and funerals, and talking to someone important e.g. boss.
You can politely tell those people that it irritates you when they do that.

i have the same feeling as you about that. i think cell phones just make people more rude. whenever i take the bus home from college, there are always those few people who have to call their parents whenever they reach each stop. it's so annoying, especially when there are about 5 stops til the final destination!!

I keep my phone on silent 24/7, so I miss most calls.
Its not like they're important anyway.
