I live accross from a field where two donkeys are kept. These donkeys are either young or a small breed. For the past 2 months there has been young teens playing on these donkeys, they are riding them around the field every day. They are now having donkey races up and down the field. I am just wondering if it was cruel in what they are doing. The owner of the donkeys says he doesnt mind what they are doing. he says they are only kids and the donkeys need the excercise and disipline. I have noticed that because the donkeys are small and that they have no saddles, when the boys mount the donkeys, the back of the donkeys lowers a bit, as if the donkey is straining a little to take the weight. Also, I went over to the field over the weekend to take a closer look at the donkeys and I noticed that one of them as a sore on his back, it looked like a rubbing sore. As these kids are now dressing in cowboy clothes eg. tight levis and wranglers, would that be the problem from the rub off the jean

You could ring the RSPCA but when I have rang about animal cruelty and neglect it has been like pulling teeth. You are better off contacting a horse/donkey website ie. ILPH. Again it is very hard to prove cruelty. The owner must know how old they are. As long as they are over 3 it shoudlnt be an issue. Riding bareback can sometimes cause sores but it could be rainscold. Sometimes equines have bad skin due to the rain. If they look well feed and watered and they are not throwing the youngsters off they might be injoying themselves. See if they have their ears upright and whether flat back. If flat back they are not happy. Nice to think someone cares.

definitely call the ASPCA, with some pics and maybe another testimony, get someone else to see it too. many people are unsure of how much weight donkeys can handle but that sounds like way too much, the sore sounds like it was from improper riding. you're doing a good thing- good luck!

It's not good that they are riding them. Call a vet and ask how it is for their health. If it is okay or you can't get the kids off them, ask if they can put blankets on them for saddles. Then maybe you could ask them if they could try not to run them so much because then their muscles will form without being too tired then they will be stronger and it won't be so tough on them.

Please please call the RSPCA immediately. It is definitely cruel and the owner should know better, though unfortunately they dont always, and dont always care either. These donkeys are not alive for the pleasure of these stupid kids or anybody else, they have a life, so i urge you to call the RSPCA today. I really hope you do.

Sounds like cruelty to me. Report the owner to the R.S.P.C.A or whatever animal abuse organization is near to you. Don't let the donkeys go on suffering.

I would phone the RSPCA (or equivalent) and report it. Its not fair to the donkeys, whether the owner agrees with it or not!...;

You so have to report this to the RSPCA. Its terrible, take some pictures as well so you have proof. The owner sounds like a careless idiot....
