If a, b and c are proportional, then to solve this you just had to keep multiplying 4, 6,and 9 by the same number, then substituting it into the equation 2a+b til you get 42.
In this case, you multiplied the numbers by 3:
a=12
b=18
c=27

as 2 x 12 + 18 = 42

Well, I got a=12, b=18 and c=27 in about 1 minute.
a=1.5b, c=1.5b and also 2.25a
What's the problem, very simple algebra?
