My husband wore his new kilt to a dance on Saturday. As the night wore on, it kept sliding down and he kept having to pull it up. He was wearing a waistcoat, so I understand wearing a belt with a waistcoat is a no-no. How should he keep the kilt up around his waist where it belongs?

Could be embarrassing of course depending on what, if anything, is worn underneath it. The answer is to hold it up with a very slim belt so it doesn't spoil the appearance of the waistcoat. You will find that is what a lot of the kilt wearers do. A work colleague of mine was a Scotsman and he would tell me that he was always being asked "Anything worn under the kilt Jock?" and has marvelous reply was "Ach no! Everything is in perfect working order"
Braces or suspenders are another solution.

He's going to need a belt I think. Not sure of kilts, I've worn skirts on occasion 9like almost every Halloween :-) ) and they have to fit the waist tight or they won't stay up. Girls have a higher waist I think so I bought the skirt to fit up higher and I bought it tight (it was a leather mini-skirt so tight was ok). The first skirt I bought was looser and I thought it would hang on my waist. Nope, not a good plan, I had the same problem. A belt is a sure fire solution since I think a tight fitting kilt may be harder to come by. The next best choice is a smaller kilt worn higher on the waist (note, waist must be smaller than hips for this to work at all though).

(and yep, it's me in the icon, not how I usually dress ... that was my halloween outfit :-) )

Are you handy at sewing? How about a belt *inside*? Or he could wear a belt inside, and then hook the kilt to the belt (with a hook that you can make), acting as an inner suspender. No belt outside, no suspenders to be seen!
