You are describing several problems. Let tackle the sex drive issue - He could have a low testosterone - that does not need shots just a cream rubbed on his shoulder daily. The low testosterone could be caused by an undescended testicle and that also would make him have a very low sperm count thus no children.
The shot issue can only be item that I recall. If he is not responding to Viagara or Cialis and that is possible then there is a treatment where the man will take a pediatric needle (ugh) and inject a compound (which I do not recall at this time) into the base of the penis and he will be able to achieve an erection but the shot is administered by your boyfriend and not the Doctor.
As far as the physician giving the patient a shot - I have no knowledge about what that would be.

He probably has a low testosterone level and needs to receive hormone replacement shots. Just look up low testosterone level.

May be low testosterone but shots aren't necessary. There are patches & creams available.
