I just got my first period 3 days ago. Is it normal for it to sometimes be really light and then be really heavy.

Yes, perfectly normal. For many women, the first 2 days are heavy, the rest of the days relatively light. But all women are different.

Plus, in your early years, your periods will not be the same from month to month, and your cycles may not be regular. For example, a "normal" period may be every 27 days. Yours may be 27 days between periods, then 32 days, then 26 days, etc... until you settle into your body's normal cycle, which could be anywhere from every 25 days to every 29 days (or something different).

You should be asking your Mom these questions :-)

Very normal, especially for your first period. For my periods, whatever time of day it starts will be the time of heavy flow for that period-- if I get my period in the morning, I will have heavy flow every morning, and it will be lighter in the evening. But that's me, and everyone can be a little different and still be normal. Especially since this is your first, you body is still figuring out what to do and how to do it. Don't worry about it, you will figure out over time what is normal for you. Welcome to womanhood, and Good Luck!!

Print this up- it will make your life better.

You period will always (always) be different, just like the weather.
{That is the advise my Grandmother gave me-over 30 years ago}

Its not based on the weather-yet its on your body and the environment "you" are IN. Your diet, stress and sleep patterns all effect your period. Your genetics (family history) has a lot to do with it as well.

Hormones are crazy chemicals in your body, so please realize that "logging" in a journal your cycles is a very good personal release for you. You will be living with this condition for the rest of your biological life. It is a blessing, not a curse. Read my monthly tips at the bottom to see what I did.

Emotions are nuts and often times the "real" pain of the muscles in your belly (belly button-to top of legs- front and back) may hurt.

Here's the tips:
Drink plenty of water, hydration helps things move better.

Once you know your cycle "days or length" plus the 2-3 days before PMS-premenstrual syndrome [emotional hormonal time] often times "WE" react more during that time, be aware and remove yourself or restrain from acting out. I have seen woman loose friendships, boyfriends and destroy things out of frustration and it only took a little "away or down time" to totally change that action.

Like a hurricane- You know its coming so ALWAYS be prepared.
Have your supplies "ready" the month-before it comes. Girl stuff products, personal wipes and trash bags to throw it all away. [toilets can not handle you flushing those items- $1000 later on plumbing- trust me]

Since this is your first period, get pads, their are all shapes, sizes and so forth, get the smaller size package and try a differnt one each month, thicker/longer for night or heavy days.
Do not be afraid of tampons, they do not hurt, go smaller first and still wear your pads. On heavy days, I have used both.

Tampons will not effect your Virginity, that is a myth. Virginity is about having sex (intercourse) not putting a tampon in your vagina for the purpose of personal hygenie.

Since you are only wearing pads, then prepare for accidents, keep a pair of loose "drawstring" black pants and underwear in your school locker with pads and babywipes. TRUST me, if you don't use it at least once, your best friend will! I was in 7th grade and had white jeans ON... I pray no girl goes through that misary! I still carry a bag in my car with a change of clothes.

You need to learn about Blood- not kidding. In the next year you will master cleaning it. Presoak that area, let is soak in "warm and soapy" water- let it sit and wash it well. Jeans are the hardest. Never dry anything in the "dryer until the stain is removed" if you do its ruined.

So sleep with a Mattress Pad and a towel under the sheets. I actually purshased a set of dark sheets just for my cycle- my husband thought it was strange, yet, he appreciated it the after the first accident. I keep them very clean, and only wear old underwear and old gowns too.

You can do almost anything on the period these days, just be wise. If you don't feel "like it" then "don't" is my rule of thumb. Other girls can relate and guys can't. So just say stomach virus or loose bowels.. [gross -yes- it works everytime!]

I started my cycle at age 9. So its a life time thing. Use that few days of month to kick back and enjoy being a girl! I read magazines, get a pedicure, watch chick flicks on TV or movies. I tend to "cry" a lot in my cycle, so I watch tons of good and sad movies and just embrace it now. Fighting it just doesn't work.

Welcome to womanhood. Its a great place to be, we are special creatures like Unicorns.

Your period may not be regular for the first while in frequency or flow due to fluctuating hormone levels . Eventually it should establish a regular cycle. What you describe is completely normal.

yes, do not worry about it. the light and at times heavy periods are due to hormonal change in a woman's body.

Yes it is very normal. You will be all messed up at first. Just because you got your first one now, does not mean that you will have one every month....it is going to take your body awhile to adjust and get into a normal groove for you. Welcome to womanhood!
