I've always wondered that, especially with the song "Dream On". The man singing doesn't sound like Stephen Tyler at all, is it him?

It depends on the the person and there life style and age or more iam a professional vocalist of 42 years in my 20,s i sang a lot higher than i do now at 60 i was weaned on Petulia Clarke never that high in range though in the 80,s i started singing country music which did not require much on the vocal cords my range dropped a lot and holding my notes, i went back to cabaret in the late 80,s and practised to get back my better form, but still in a low range hope this helps answer your question also an Elvis fan his earlier records his voice did not have the quality as in his later years its the old saying practise makes perfect and if you dont use it you lose it

Over time a person's voice changes. Steven Tyler also yells/screams a lot when he sings, so there is a decent chance he has nodes on his vocal cords, which will greatly alter the tone quality and sound of someone's voice.

You know, I've always wondered the same thing. I asked my highly knowlegable friend who the "original" singer was for Aerosmith, and when he insisted it had always been Steven Tyler - I thought he was crazy. He does sound COMPLETELY different. But it is him. Weirdness.

I'm so glad to see your question. I feel the same way!!! For the longest time I wondered the same thing, and I checked. It is indeed him singing that song.

Maybe it was all the bad stuff that he did in his younger years that made him sound different. He has been clean for years and tries to maintain his fitness as he grows older.

not as much heroin and whiskey in his system yet. now he just sings like that, because he's old and he can't hit the notes. live that is. on album they cover it up with protools. 60 year old men shouldn't wear spandex.
