Depends what age you want to work with! If 0-5 year olds probably best going for an NVQ, an NVQ 4 is the same as a degree. Having said that if you find an early childhood/education course that has regular placements in a setting, then go for that! It gives you theory and experience but sticks with the current government policy to get graduates working in the early years!

If you want to work in a nursery class in a school (3-5 year olds) then i'd say do an early childhood studies course and then a PGCE, the ECS course will give you better chances of getting on a primary PGCE which are highly sought over!

Hope this helps

Either a Bachelor of Education degree, or if you already have a degree you you need to do a PGCE (post graduate certificate in education). Good luck but be prepared for masses of paperwork, meetings and trivial issues that will drive you mad.
