It seems to me that the people of the Philippines have a love/hate relationship with the Marcos family. The family took billions in dollars from the people in order to guarantee they would continue to live the "very" good life after their dimise. One would think that the family would not be idolized by the people, but yet the people continue to elect them to public office. I have talked to many Filipinos and they say, "But the family was not guilty only Imelda and the President were guilty." My reply is that even to the present day grandchildren they are all equally guilty because they continue to accept and continue to prosper from the ill gain riches. I think President Marcos had the opportunity and missed it to be the greatest Filipino ever. One thing is for sure no Filipino is better known around the world than President and Imelda Marcos.

In the U.S.A. during the depression their was an enormous attraction to movie stars and movies regardless of the immoral and extravagant life the movie star might live. Poor people were mysteriously attracted to those that were living a rich and extravagant life they could only dream of. I wonder if the same may be true in the Philippines.

President Aquino is idolized by many although her administration was as corrupt as any and her framily certainly has not dealt fairly with the farmers. President Estrada still has a large following so how can anyone determine who the people of the Philippine will declare a great president and hero.

Well, if you look at it closely, Marcos has done well enough than any other presidents. This is when Philippines started to rise and he built many infrastructures. Its just that he is a corrupt but intelligent president that he changed the constitution to extend his term and he activated Martial Law in the Philippines to stop people from being violent.

Since he became president, the philippines was ahead with other asean countries, but after so many years, he became corrupt and our country is now behind in terms of the economy. He stole the people's money, he built mansions and palaces for his family. the first family became greedy and wanted all for themselves, up to now the victims of the killings of martial law have not yet been paid. the first lady says, she loves the filipino people, if she truly loves his countrymen, then she should give it all back, the hidden wealth that they have stolen. it's such a sad thing, coz some people have already forgotten what they have done, and now they are thinking of running in the coming elections.

Let me give you my idea of the late President Marcos. He is brilliant and the best President in terms of abilities. His declaration of Martial Law was in good faith and was intended to check the rising communist movement in the Philippines. In fact his declaration of Martial Law was with the blessings of the American government. His vision of a "Bagong Lipunan" (New Society) was idealistic and was supposed to be the blueprint for the Philippines to rise from the ashes like a phoenix. The Philippines politically then was similar to Singapore which was under Martial Law where no one was supposed to oppose the existing government. BUT Singapore had a benevolent dictator, in the guise of Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew, who used his authority to fix his country's problems. This is also the same with Malaysias former Prime Minister Mahatir, which he had total control over the media. The mistake of President Marcos was he indulged himself with his new found power. Instead of implementing his "Bagong Lipunan" program, he pampered his cronies to their hearts desire and wasted funds supposed to be used in that program. Because of this, the Philippines missed the opportunity to industrialize along with Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. For everyones information, the Philippines was richer than Singapore and Malaysia back in the 1950's and even the 1960's. If only President Marcos did what he was supposed to do, he would have become the greatest President in the Philippines. If he was still alive all I can say to him is "sayang"....what a waste....he missed that opportunity to become the greatest President of the Philippines, even greater than President Ramon Magsaysay.

For the sake of argument, let say that crocodile in Malacanang Palace is as evil as she can be BUT if she can turn around the countrys economy and give people better opportunities....would it matter? Again, take the case of Singapore and Malaysia. In Singapore right now you can not gather in a group more than 3 to protest of any kind. In fact when the World Bank gathered in Singapore, all possible foreign protestors, including Filipinos were not given visa entry. This happened just recent. Media in Malaysia is tightly controlled by the government but they have a very progressive economy. Business is business. As long as money is pouring in, people are benefiting from it, no one would mind being controlled tightly by their government. Most of those who complain about freedom and democracy are foreigners who has no idea of the local culture of the people.

Marcos stole from the people , with all the money that was being paid by the US for Subic bay and Clark , he could have done so much for the country . Instead he spent the money on himself and his family . He was a dictator who oppressed the Philippines .
Check your facts before you try to make him a hero .

I do believe on the capabilities and intelligence of late Ferdinand Marcos. Its just happened that he didn't control all of the people around him that supposedly implementing rules and regulations for good not for their own interests. That thing made the image of our late president became bad to Filipinoes who really didn't understand the dirty politics revolving in our government.

As if other politicians aren't corrupt. Please people, get your facts straight. Those other politicians only appear to be godsent with the way they talk and criticize others when the truth is, they're the more corrupt ones! They talk as if they were the best presidents ever to govern the country. Tsk tsk... as if.
