I have heard they are very vicious animals that will attack anything they see could be food including people.

A fisher (Martes pennanti) is a large member of the weasel family, mustellidae. It is dark brown and males may weigh a bit over 20 pounds (follow this link for a pic, http://www.animalpicturesarchive.com/view.php?tid=3&did=65681 ). They prey on pretty much anything they can catch, that includes, everything from squirrels and rabbits, to porcupines (which it is able to catch and avoid the quills), birds, eggs, pet cats... They will not attack people, they tend to disappear rather quickly in the presence of humans.

There are two types of animals called fisher. One is a family of birds. The other are mammals that are related to the weasel family, like minks and mongooses. I think you mean the mammalian fischer. They are known to have terrible tempers and vicious teeth. I've never met one up close and probably won't.

FISHER - a dark-brown or blackish marten, Martes pennanti, of northern North America

MARTEN - any of several slender, chiefly arboreal carnivores of the genus Martes, of northern forests, having a long, glossy coat and bushy tail

Sounds like it could be what you were told, though I don't know about them attacking people or not.
