All human beings originated in Africa, and were presumably dark-skinned or black. But when a proportion migrated to other parts of the world, where the sun shines much less brightly, say Northern Europe, melanin, which darkens the skin, was much less readily produced, and people got progressively lighter in complexion. And the genes suited to the new climate became more dominant. Consider eye color: in the more tropical zones, where the sun is strong, people tend to have black or brown eyes because these prevent too much light invading the retina; in more northern zones, blue eyes are more suitable because they block less of the light coming in--suitable because there is much less sunlight around. That said these changes in pigmentation and eye color take centuries. A white man in the tropics grows darker but unless his family has been there for generations, not that much darker. Similarly with black men and women who live in cold or temperate climates for years. The weather is an important factor but it takes many generations to make a difference. We are definitely not a different species in the biological sense of the term. Cultural differences between races are sometimes so strong that some erroneously think it must arise from a difference of species.

its the weather...
as we evolved slowly in the colder regions people needed to be able to absorb enough nutrients from the sun and so their skin lightened (by all the darker people dieing off because they wer vitamin D deprived) untill it was all light skin light hair and light eyes. In hotter places the lighet people died off and it became primarily dark skin because they would absorbe too much of the vitamines and it became toxic and the frequent burns lead t cancer. as for plaecs in the middle such as mexico, south america, most of north america (before european colonization of course), the medaterraninan, and a few more places the skin stayd somewhere in the middle because the climate was in the middle that is why mexicans south americans native americans greeks itallians and asians are all somewhere between dark brown and "white".
i hope that helped you some if you dont believe in evolution then it probably didnt. but i tried.

Think of it in this way...humans are another species of animal, just like dogs and cats...and like dogs and cats there are different breeds of the species....like there are rottweilers, golden retrievers, poodles, shih tzu dogs and there are angora, siamese, tabby and calico cats there are blacks, whites, asians, etc. of humans. We may look different, but we are alike...just like dogs and cats. Now, if more people would see this, perhaps there would be less fighting and less bigotry in this world and we could all share this planet together in peace.

it's environmental. the darker you are the more sunlight you are exposed to. the lighter you are means absence of sunlight. what happens when a white person goes to the tanning bed, they get darker.
