We have a new house which is a year old now and we have noticed in the middle of the night that there is something in the attic scratching and moving around. I do not know if it is a bird or squirrel up there. Somehow something got up there and moves around at night. The only possible way it could have gotten in was in this vent in the front of the house which I believe it could be a bird up there trying to get out. These are new homes and absolutely no trees around the area, but it could still possibly be a squirrel up there. There is a latch door in the garage which goes to the attic. Would it be a good idea to open the garage door and open the latch door in the ceiling and possibly the critter will find its way out?? Thanks for whatever advice you can give me.

Do you hear any chirping? If not it sounds like you have a "bat in your belfry". Bats typically won't make any sound - unlike a bird or mouse. A bird will chirp or peck - a mouse will scratch and gnaw constantly. A bat will simply scratch. Leaving the door open is a good idea, but if there is light and it is a bat he won't gravitate towards it. Someone once told me that using a dog whistle repeatedly will really upset them and make them find their way out - but that may be an old wives tale.
One thing for certain, don't let it go too long- if you do and it dies the smell never really goes away.....

First, you need to take a look in your attic and see what kind of critter you are dealing with. With a little luck, the critter may come right out the door when you open it, so wait a few minutes before heading into the attic. If the critter leaves, go into the attic and figure out how he got in there in the first place. If the critter stays, and it's a mouse or a rat, get a trap from Home Depot or Lowe's. If it's a bat, racoon, bird, call an exterminator.

Better bring in an exterminator, the critter could cost you more than the price of having the thing removed. It must have a way in and out, it needs to get water to survive.

get you a medium " live " trap, set it and in a few days your problem will be solved
