You can use whatever suits you. It is said Brial May uses an old silver sixpence coin.

Would metal plectrums not wear the guitar strings ?
The plectrums I used were plastic or similar.
The metal plectrums I thought were when they are used to play like Spanish guitar, or steel guitar.
I don't think they are that expensive that you have to go to the bother to make one yourself.
My nephew is a profesional guitarist and has his own band an buys his.

I cant tell you how often I have lost my plectrum too. I tried out nearly all possibilities to create on of my own: from carton of a cigarette packet throgh to cutting up a plastic package of a supermarket yogurt.
Piece of small even flat wood works well to. But please forget about metal. Its definitive the wrong material in my opinion you can not more than destroy your strings or cut your hands. In a word be imaginative without harming yourself nor destroying your valuable instrument. (Treat it like a woman)

PS: And if you need a bootle-neck try it like the ancient blues musicians destroying a beer bottle (But allways destroyed end upward and dont use a too small neck. Your fingers will thank you)

Greetings to my guitar-friend

Don't use metal, it will knacker your strings, use old credit cards or something similar, and cut them to shape.
