When I was little, I remember the daycares that I went to...and some of the stuff that went on there. Pacifiers were considered community...everyone used them, whether they belonged to them or not...and if one child had a medication, it was given to everyone (to prevent the others getting sick?). There was no guarantee that my little sister or I would go home wearing our own clothes..if they got dirty, the daycare chick would put us in someone else's spare clothes. Is that common practice, or was it just something that happened when I was little? I plan on staying at home with my child, but if I need to go back to work, I want to know what will happen.

What I have done when my boys were little was to just "show up" at the kids daycare. Luckily for a while I worked at a job I had time to just show up....
I learned some real scary things and fired several places. I also found a great place who never had anything to hide....
I recommend everyone with small children to just show up where ever the children are at, this way you see what "really" is going on. Daycare peeps think it is strange but oh well....I also ran into several places that this was not a option, those places I passed up. If you can not just show up, to me, there is something to hide at the place....
BTW License daycare does not always mean a "good" daycare...

well I take my child to a very nice daycare.. well its pretty expensive. And I love my kids...
and I noticed that when I go to the day care mothers or fathers leave doors open just let other parents in.. I find that this is a saftey issue and could, or possible be trouble. I as security I have to think of all formulars.. all issues and all thoughts ... things that you would never think could happen but if your mind is wrapped around it then it is a possiblilty....... so anyways when I check in, I punch my code.. and put my hand print to get the door to unlock.. but if a crazy man or woman that carries in a kid women and men normally just leave the door open ...To me you might as well leave the door open and let anyone come in to look at your children.. .. this is a safety concern. big time.... even for Goddar school

There is never a guarantee that a daycare (or anyone else you leave your child with) will be safe. But at some point, if you want to get out of the house or if you want to work, you'll have to take that leap. I wasn't thrilled about it, but we are very pleased with our daycare right now.
Before choosing one, I made sure anyone I called to inquire about openings was licensed with the state. I actually preferred a home daycare to a center because (1) they're cheaper, (2) it's a more realistic atmosphere, (3) they get more one on one attention as babies. You can also check if they've had any complaints with your local licensing agency. Then make sure you interview them and get a feel for them. I also asked to visit one day and just watch her interact with the kids and to check out her house for appropriate childproofing.
I, too, like to drop in unannounced. Any daycare that won't allow that is sketchy. Ours welcomes us to come by anytime. But the best thing is that my son smiles and reaches for the daycare provider, so I know he likes her and likes being there.

They can't do that these days at a professional Day care. There are laws. If you are still worried, make a surprise visit after the intial screening. Another way, I am sure all violations of state law are public, so call up and ask for an appointment at your local Human Health Services to discuss how and what you can do to better screen for a safe, clean, and less infectious environment. You can also go to your phone book and look up any other government (local) agency that may be linked in finding out the better suitable daycare for your baby. Ask a friend or relatives. I understand your fears. If you got the time be decisive and discerning. It's your baby......:>)

There are several things you can do, you can run a criminal and background check on the day care provider, visit the day care several times before admitting your child at different times of day to observe the children, Are they happy? Do they love the care provider? Does she seem to care about them? Is it clean? Are children cared for in a way that makes you comfortable? Are the toys appropriate for age group? Talk to care provider if your child uses a pacifier or bottle about "group sharing" and your concerns on this issue. By that time you should have a better grip on whether it is the right place for your child.

Daycares are never safe, its a false sense of security that is offered, so take a chance, roll the dice and hope for the best. Hopefully no permanat damage will be done to your child but you just never really know now do you.
