I agree, run a cycle with bleach. If that does not correct the issue then The mildew is brobably comming from the outside of the drum or even the floor under the washer. You can remove the panels and clean with a solution of bleach and also pull out the washer to check the floor.

I would probably run a cycle through the washer, with no clothes in it, just hot water and maybe half a bottle of bleach. If your washer has a "two rinse" option, use that. If should kill any mildew that may be present. Choose the "full" water level, or largest load, however it's worded.
Also, check your lint filter. Yes, even washers have them. Sometimes you can get weeks or months worth of wet, soggy lint built up in there, and it can start to smell. Clean it out.

Do an empty wash with soap and a little bleach!
The bleach will kill all of the live Bactria that is in your washer at the moment!
From then on, when you have emptied the washer always leave the door well open so that air can get in!

Yes, run a cycle using a small amount of detergent. Let it go till the end. What you need to do to stop this from happening again, is always leave the door to the washing machine open The water that is left inside will evaporate and will not leave a mouldy smell. I learned from experience.

Put a small amount of bleach direct into the drum and run on a hot wash, always leave the door open after use so the drum and rubber seal can dry out so that smell won't come back.

You can try running a cycle and putting some pine sol or equivalent pine cleaner in the washer. You can get a jug of pine cleaner for $1.00 at any Dollar store. It cleans and deodorizes and don't worry, your clothes will not smell like pine sol later.

That means your washer isn't draining properly. Make sure the hose in the back is set low enough to let the water drain properly.
