serial ATA is the new type of hard drives. These are different from the regular IDE as they use a new cable(similar to usb) for data transfers.

A serial version of the ATA (IDE) interface, which has been the de facto standard hard disk interface for desktop PCs for more than two decades. The original Parallel ATA (PATA) interface was launched in 1986. SATA was introduced in 2002 at significantly higher speed, transferring data in each direction at 1.5 Gbps. A year later, SATA II increased speed to 3 Gbps.

SATA provides a point-to-point channel between motherboard and drive rather than the master-slave architecture in the parallel technology

SATA is the faster replacement cable for generally internal drives to communicate with the motherboard. This replaces the large ribbon cable, which makes it alot easier to connect device to the main board as you no longer have to worry about bending pins when you push the connector on. The end of the cable is now a square piece of plastic, with an l shaped slot which connects to the correspining male slot on the motherboard. generally the cables are red, and are mainly used for Hard drives currently, but motherboard manufacturers such as ASUS have made an expansion slot that fills up a slot on the pc case so that you can plug in external SATA drives. maybe for the forthcoming HD-DVD or blue ray drives?

Serial ATA. It is the newer interface for hard drives on PC's. If your computer doesn't have a SATA interface built into the motherboard you will have to purchase an add on SATA card and install it in an open PCI slot. Check your computer's/motherboard's manual for information on this.

In computer hardware, Serial ATA is a computer bus technology primarily designed for transfer of data to and from a hard disk. It is the successor to the legacy AT Attachment standard (ATA). This older technology was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA) to distinguish it from Serial ATA.

Both SATA and PATA drives are IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) drives, although IDE is often misused to indicate PATA drives.
