If you're thinking of getting one of the "latest generation" game systems, then the Nintendo Wii. Videogames on other game systems are almost all completely saturated with violence. The Wii costs significantly less, and the games cost less too. The Playstation 3 is very "cool", but expensive and very hard to find. The X-Box 360 is readily available, somewhat more expensive than the Wii, and it's games are also more expensive.

The Wii comes with one set of games called Wii Sports, he might like some of that.

The Wii also comes with the cool new feature: motion sensitive controller. (The Playstation 3 also has this, but the Wii's version is prob. cooler for kids and family).

You could also consider either a Playstation 2 or a Game Cube. Most of PS2 (Playstation 2) games aren't for 7 year olds, but the PS2 has SO many games, there are many that are good for kids his age like Rayman and Rayman 2. Of all the game systems I've mentioned, the PS2 is the most popular and has the most games.

Also available for Playstation 2 is one "game" which is actually 28 different games in one: the "Sega Genesis Collection".

I would recomend going to a games store and asking them there. Ask them to tell you about games age ratings.

Because the PS2 has so many game for it, you'll also find that it has the most cheap discounted new games (after the game has been out for a year or two, the price is usually less than half as much) and the largest selection of used games available.

Many people are going to say Xbox 360 which by the way is an amazing machine; however, its geared towards the older age group. The Nintendo Wii has many more age appropriate games for a 7 yo.

The Nintendo Wii. Nintendo never fails for kids! Everyone I know grew up on one, it's everyone's first console. And there more kid friendly games right now, the ps3 and the xbox 360 aren't geared at younger kids. They might have a few but the mature rated and teen rated games far outweigh the kids games on those systems. I would get the Wii for him, they have games on it that also make him get "interactive" and move around.
