I'm not offended at all...of course I have a sense of humor.
It does sometimes bother me that many straight people assume that we're all like these characters.
Someday we will look at them like African Americans look at Amos and Andy.

i think the notion that there is a single gay community is probably more offensive - there are probably a lot of people who happen to be gay and don't really like catherine tate or jack mcfarland (but more likely because they make bad comedy than for any other reason).

My friends and I (all gay) absolutely love Derek Faye from the Catherine Tate show. Its just fun: HOW can anyone be offended.
I dislike Jack, not because he is gay but because he is SHALLOW. At the end of the day, we are humans who happen to be gay, not the other way round!

Gays are small proportion of society and an easy target for poking fun at and lampooning...especially when the gay community has 'screaming queens' and other larger than life people in it. People that are different from the 'norm' can inspire entertainers to use them as a basis for characters.
But both characters you mentioned are comedy characters, it's not like they are stereotypes in a serious drama.
Gay characters are often used in comedy to inject a sense of outlandish fun.
Being gay does not mean there is an automatic sense-of-humour failure, we can laugh at ourselves as much as we can laugh at you ;-)

I have seen and known gay folks who those characters fit to a "T" and most of us Gay folks know that it is just a TV comedy.
Being able to laugh at yourself, as you laugh at others, is a sure sign of a big person.
Gays poke fun at other gays, straights do the same to each other, then it gets blended and we all poke fun at each other.
When there is no meaness involved, only clean fun, everyone gets a chuckle.

I am far more offended by portrayal of "Gays" on shows such as Jerry Springer etc. They are not the people I want representing the Gay community

I loved Jack. I thought the show was very clever. However, an important part was that they showed other types of gay men.
