The reason gas is more expensive in Europe is because the tax is much higher. That's the downside to socialism, super high taxes to pay for "entitlements" It also encourages people to drive little cars that are fuel efficient. Lead was phased out of gasoline for environmental reasons. Catalytic converters remove many of the pollutants from gas but would be damaged by the lead in gas.
