Give it to him before he goes Alice! Then he can take it with him and think of you every time he looks at it.
Just like I do with my Elizabeth Duke £15.99 engagement ring

Before he goes. Just save him a "little present" to unwrap Christmas, if that would make you feel better. I am a firm believer in "we're not promised tomorrow".

Pack it in his baggage without him knowing. Will make him feel good to find it when he unpacks. Then you can set up a "romantic" night before he leaves and then another when he returns. You do that, he will think of you while he is gone and look forward to coming back.

Depends on how close to Christmas he is going. And how soon he'll be back. I think it would be more romantic before he leaves. Assuming he ain't leaving tomorrow.

Depends what it is love
Can he take it with him
or do you need to be there
We need more info
Personally I'd get him 2 presents,
One before and one after
Everyones a winner

Wait and see what he does first. If he gives you your present first, then give him his. If he gives you your present when he returns, he can have his then. If he doesn't do either, bin him. you obviously care a lot more about him than he does about you.
