Lee was trying for a major win to secure foreign recognition and assistance but due to ill health, poor decisions and weak subordinates lost. This was not the High Water Mark or the Turning point which everyone claims that was at Franklin, which dwarfs Gettysburg. God Bless You and The Southern People.

One of my ancestors was wounded, which resulted in him spending the rest of the Civil War in the hospital and luckily not dying. It also made him eligible for land grant out west, which he took.

As for everybody else ...

It was where Union Gen. George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lee's invasion of the North. It was one of the bloodiest battles in the very bloody "War Between the States." It took place over three days at the beginning of July 1863.

Four months later, a National Cemetary was dedidcated at the battlefield and at that dedication ceremony, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his most famous speech: the Gettysburg Address which opened with:

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. "

A small war took place, and more importantly, it is remembered for the world famous memorable speech given to motivate the soldiers by the US President, Mr.Abraham Lincoln, saying..... "Four score and seven years ago...." and added, "people may forget what we said here, but may not forget what was done here".. ironically, it is for this speech the event is even now remembered..... also, the speech was prepared in a very short time, and also just before the scheduled timing, and the text is prescribed in some schools in even far eastern countries for the quality of theme, language, and contents as a part of English Text book for the subject of language English !

Richard Nixon made a famous speech to the troops just before they went into battle against the British. Apparently it was quite moving but all mp3 copies were lost when the Titanic sank.

Tragic!

Two armies accidentally bumped into each other....Heth's Division of Ewall's Corps ran up against Buford's Division of cavalry.. Both sides brought up their armies and the Union won, thanks to their high ground defences. This was the Confederacy's 'high water' mark in the war. From then on, they were on the tactical defensive.
