First you have to study and understand what Theater is. I recommend the book History of the Theater by Oscar Brocket. Also you should read Antonin Artaud, Grotoski, Stanislaski among others. Svoboda is a lightinig designer that has made remarkable designs.

get a degree, masters is always best. Or you could jsut go out and join the union. Working the union can suck at first but once you start to work your way up people will get to know you better and you will get better jobs. going to college for theatre is nice because then you can design in a more controlled enviroment and get experience.

Probably have to go to school for it. It can take years of training and exposure.
I have been in "the theater" for 30 years and still today I am reading theory books on art and art-making.

Get involved, get exposed to a broad range of work.
