The iris can open/close the pupil to control the amount of light reaching the retina.

The part of your eye called the pupil is the opening which lights in. The pupil is the opening of the iris. The iris changes size to let more or less light in.

Pupil. It's the black stuff in the middle of your eyeballs. In the dark, it gets bigger because it needs more light.
