Because you can get a better 'feel' of the diameter you're measuring with a micrometer. A vernier can still be used but it's not as easy to be sure you have the correct measurement. With a micrometer you can feel the pressure of the measuring anvil on the diameter you're measuring as you roll it over the surface and can, from experience, be certain the your measurement will be correct quite easily. The micrometer and vernier can both measure to equal accuracies depending on the calibration, no matter what other people say, it's the feel of the surface on a diameter that makes the micrometer superior. On flat surfaces the feel is not so important as the flat anvils of the vernier can be aligned much easier. I'm a qualified toolmaker and engineer so I know what I'm talking about.

The most important thing in the micrometer is the least count. Actually least count is the minimum amount that can be measured with the micrometer. It is possible to measure at micro-scale level with the micrometer which is not possible with the help of vernier caliper. As the diameter of a wire is actually very small, micrometer is used to measure the diameter of the wire.

The micrometer is more accurate because it can measure upto a millionth of a meter. Its least count is 1mm/100. Hence it can give more accurate readings compared to a vernier caliper.
