Both heart attack and stroke are due to ischemia, which is restricted blood flow to the organ. Both of these organs have a high requirement for oxygen, so reduced or absent blood flow to either organ quickly leads to cell damage and then cell death.
In a heart attack, blood flow is usually restricted or blocked in the coronary arteries, leading to MI (myocardial infarction) in the part of the heart supplied by the troubled artery. Other possibilities for heart attack include such things as arrhythmias and lung problems, such as pulmonary embolism.
In a stroke, a part of the brain loses its blood supply due to blockage or rupture of the vessels that supply it. This can be anywhere from small and transient, such as in a "mini-stroke", where a clot temporarily blocks a section of blood flow (commonly called a TIA, or transient ischemic attack) up to a large vessel that is permanently blocked (or bleeding) leading to ischemia and necrosis (cell death) to a larger section of the brain, with critical or fatal results.
In either case, quick medical attention can often limit or prevent long-term damage. The faster the oxygen supply can be restored, the less harm that is done.

the heart attack takes place in the heart. It occurs when decaying blood vessels mean that some muscular tissue in the heart gets starved of oxygen for a while, and starts dying.
the stroke takes place in the brain. It has the same basic cause - decaying blood vessels do not transport enough blood to a given area in a reasonable amount of time - but the effect is that brain tissue gets damaged and/or dies.
after a heart attack the patient will have a potentially weaker heart (though if it was very mild the muscle tissue may fully recover). A weaker heart will mean that the patient will have to be careful with intense exercice, or intense emotions.
after a stroke the patient will have a potentially affected brain function, which may later recover as the brain establishes new connexions. The affected brain function can lead to problems in speech, ability to read, to write, in more serious cases to walk, eat, accomplish simple tasks.
hope this helps

No such thing as a heart stroke as has already been pointed out. There are two types of epileptic seizures...grand mal and petit mal. Sounds like the Dr. isn't one of the best, at least at first. The grand mal seizure is severe ,and you'll definitely recognize it in the future. Good thing your dad finally got a correct diagnosis. More than likely his condition will be controlled with anti-seizure med. That must have been really scarey for you. Should your father ever have another one of those seizures, I suggest you make sure he's not going to hurt himself when it's going on, and by all means-don't try to hold him down. Secondly, be sure you can time the seizure if possible and immediately call 911. By timing the seizure, you can tell the paramedics how long it lasted or has been going on. People that have a grand mal do NOT breath while it's going on, so an extended one (Status Epilepticus) will kill. And by all means, don't put your hand in his mouth. The old wive's tale about sticking something in their mouths to keep them from swallowing their tongue is false....well, most of the time anyway. To prevent that, it's better to just turn the person on their side if possible. I sure hope this may help you.

A heart attack happens when a blood vessel on the heart is blocked thus stopped oxygen supply to the heart itself.
A stroke is when there is a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain and the affected area of the brain is damaged due to lack of blood supply.
