From a writer point of view, what makes John Grisham's novels so popular? Is it the plot, character, the legal thriller genre?

Scott Turow also wrote legal thrillers but not as popular as John Grisham's novels? Why? What do you think is the formula of John Grisham's novel?

My first answer was going to be "God Knows" because I find Grisham's novels tedious.

However, taking an objective view of his work, he actually adopts a lot of the basic requirements for a "popularl" novel,

1. His work is always tightly plotted. There are few holes in the storyline, things happen for a reason, there is little in the way of coincidence or other plot stretching devices

2. His style is realistic, which makes it easy for the reader to identify with it

3. He develops his characters well, so the reader actually cares about them

4. His work is constructed in a way which makes it easy to read

I think it's because they are quick reads...something you would take to the beach. Not a whole lot of thought is needed to comprehend...I have to think w/ Scott Turow's books....LOL Danielle Steele is another example...wow, you think Grisham's start sounding the same? Steele needs to completely give it up...but I've been reading her for 20 years...I guess the next generation is just discovering her though.
